Do I need a notary to fill out I-9's for my employees?
Typically, no. A notary cannot by law notarize an I-9. However, a Notary Public has experience with verifying ID's and most know how to fill out an I-9 correctly. So it may be worth it to have a Notary represent your company.
A company may hire a notary for I-9 verification to streamline the onboarding process for remote employees and ensure compliance with federal employment verification requirements. Since employers are responsible for verifying the identity and work authorization of new hires, they can designate a notary as an authorized representative to complete Section 2 of Form I-9. This is especially useful for businesses with a dispersed workforce, as notaries provide a convenient, trusted, and professional option for verifying documents in person. By using a notary, companies can reduce the risk of errors, maintain compliance with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) regulations, and offer a seamless hiring experience for employees who cannot visit a corporate office. Please note***** I-9 Forms SHOULD NOT be notarized, however, a notary is experienced in verifying the identity of a signer. This may be a good solution for larger companies and their hiring practices.
Pricing for this service will depend on how many employees and the location of your business. I am also familiar with E-Verify. If your employee is a remote employee and requires me to travel to their home, there will be an additional travel fee of .70 per mile to and from their location, and an additional $10 convenience fee.
